First, your tour stops at Volubilis, a stunning archaeological site. Historians consider it one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. In fact, excavations show that the city dates back to at least the 3rd century BC. Its impressive remains stand as a testament to the civilizations that once flourished here. For instance, you can see ancient columns, grand houses, temples, and triumphal arches.
However, the site is most famous for its magnificent mosaics. Many of these artworks remain perfectly preserved in their original locations. Highlights include the vibrant mythological scenes in the “Bath of Diana” and the “Labours of Hercules.” Additionally, you will explore the remains of major public buildings. These include the Capitol, the basilica, the public square, and the remnants of the city’s great wall.
Next, you will visit Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. People revere this town as the first Islamic city in North Africa, named after its founder, Moulay Idriss I. The town sits 550 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Zerhoun. From there, it overlooks lush green plains dotted with olive trees.
Historically, authorities closed the town to non-Muslims until 1917, so it retains a holy character. While the town is now open to all, the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss itself remains off-limits to non-Muslims. The city itself is a charming maze of stairways. You can wander its narrow streets or seek out Morocco’s only circular minaret. Furthermore, its terraces provide wonderful panoramic views of the town and landscape.
Finally, your tour arrives in Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Its medina is beautiful and tranquil. Inside, you can find colorful souks where artisans practice traditional weaving and ironwork.
While the medina is lovely, the most impressive sites in Meknes lie just outside its walls. Most notably, Sultan Moulay Ismail built 40 km of defensive walls around the city. These walls feature monumental gates and towers. Among them, most agree that the magnificent Bab Mansour is the most impressive imperial gate in all of Morocco.
Beyond this gate lies the bustling Lahdem Square. It has a vibrant atmosphere, similar to Marrakech’s Jemaa el-Fnaa. Here, you will find storytellers and snake charmers. Afterward, you will visit the Royal Stables (Heri es-Souani). This immense architectural marvel once housed thousands of royal horses. Its beautiful ruins also provide a fantastic spot for photos.
As a result of its immense historical significance, UNESCO designated Meknes a World Heritage site in 1996. Your day trip then concludes with a comfortable transfer back to your accommodation in Fes.
