Today, we journey from the coast to the imperial heart of Fes. Our first stop is Rabat, Morocco’s modern capital. We’ll explore its UNESCO-listed medina and see the iconic Hassan Tower. Next, we travel back in time at Volubilis, the impressive ancient Roman ruins that mark the southern edge of the empire. Afterwards, we’ll visit the imperial city of Meknes, where we’ll see the grand Bab Mansour gate and the historic Herri es-Souani, the former royal stables and granary. Our day concludes as we arrive in Fes, the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco.
Today is dedicated to exploring the wonders of Fes with an expert local guide. We’ll delve into the Fes el-Bali medina, one of the world’s largest living medieval cities. You will see the Royal Palace gates and visit the Kairaouine Mosque and University, the oldest university in the world. After a traditional lunch in the medina, your tour continues to the tomb of city founder Moulay Idriss II, the Nejjarine Fountain, and the Batha Museum. We’ll conclude the day with a stunning panoramic view of the entire medina before returning to your riad or hotel.
We depart Fes and journey into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Our route takes us through Ifrane, often called “Morocco’s Switzerland” for its alpine architecture, and into the fragrant cedar forests of Azrou, where you may spot Barbary macaques in their natural habitat.
